Michael Burns

Michael Burns is an associate teaching professor in the Department of Speech & Hearing Sciences at the University of Washington. Since he joined the department in 2008, he has taught several undergraduate and graduate courses and supervised numerous graduate clinicians at the UW Speech & Hearing Clinic in in evaluating and treating adults with acquired neurological disorders. He has also conducted research and published several peer-reviewed papers related to increasing health care access for individuals who struggle to communicate. For the Certificate in Speech, Language & Hearing Foundations, Burns developed the Anatomy, Physiology & Science of Speech & Swallowing (SPHSC 353) and Neurological Foundations of Communication & Swallowing (SPHSC 426) courses. He has a master’s in speech-language pathology from California State University, Fresno, and a Ph.D. in rehabilitation science from the University of Washington.
